Mid-(off) Season Safety

I thought I would touch base with you all to update you on current works around the club.

The Committee is still on the hunt for a new RIB to upgrade our rescue fleet, and make us safer on the water. There are 2 we are looking at currently, and once we make the decision we will inform you all.

Speaking of being safe on the water, we would like EVERY SINGLE PERSON to watch this video. With a larger number of people on the water each week, we are also having to perform more rescues as people learn (not a bad thing!). Now obviously, humans are more important than boats and are the priority. ALWAYS rescue the person first, the boat second. Once that is done, if you need to assist in righting a boat, a catamaran is harder to put the pointy bit back in the air. So here is a video to help you understand what to do.
Yes, it is done on a nice sunny day, where the water is warm.
No, there are no waves and contrasting tide.
HOWEVER – this is a good place to start your learning. And if you want more help to learn – which we are going to be offering at the start of the season – please ask!
Anyway, on to the video:

I’ll also take this opportunity remind you about the online learning available through Australian Sailing. Have you completed your courses yet? While we won’t be seeking proof of learning, we strongly encourage you all to complete this – you never know what the Principal Race Officer will have you doing on your allocated duty day!

Around the club we continue to improve things. The canteen continues to be worked on, the floor on Wally’s Landing flooring has been repaired, bolts continue to be replaced and painting continues to happen. And while all this happened on Sunday, I must pass on a big thank you once again to all involved in possibly the coldest Bunnings Sausage Sizzle in history. I hope you have defrosted by now!
And while you may not be thinking about sailing just yet, the next time you do, take a look at your old wetsuits. If you are like me then you probably have about 5 or 6 laying about, in various states of falling apart. If so, consider donating them to be re-made into other products, like soft fall ground cover, made possible by Rip Curl. Thanks to Leanne Beeson.
